"Ultraluminous X-ray Sources" |
Abstract:
Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) have apparent luminosities exceeding
the likely Eddington value for stellar-mass black holes. I will discuss
reasons why the majority are nevertheless probably X-ray binaries in
unusual states, although a small subset may have more exotic origins. ULXs
are strongly associated with star formation, and may have something to
tell us about galaxy formation also.
