| Unstable, eccentric and warped: the behaviour of accretion discs in close binaries |
| The accretion discs in cataclysmic variables and X-ray transients are susceptible to thermal-viscous, tidal and warping instabilities. The interplay between these various instabilities leads to the wide variety of outburst phenomena associated with close binaries. I will present the results of recent 2 and 3 dimensional numerical calculations of the behaviour of accretion discs in close binaries as they evolve under the influence of the above instabilities. |
