With kinematics and physical information (temperatures, luminosities, gravities) for a billion stars, ESA's GAIA satellite will revolutionise the study of our Galaxy and its formation and evolution. The talk will provide an overview of the science harvest from GAIA, and also the technological approach used to achieve the ambitious goals of the mission.
