Very High Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy - The View from Arizona |
An introduction to the rapidly expanding field of gamma-ray astronomy in the TeV regime. The aim of this talk is to illustrate the current capabilities of the ground-based Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique, and the potential of the multi-million dollar telescope facilities now under construction. The success of the Whipple 10m Telescope over the past decade, from the detection of the Crab Nebula in 1989 with the first imaging camera to the discovery in 2001 of the most distant VHE gamma-ray blazar to date, is used to illustrate the development of the field as a whole. |
