Ernest Rutherford Fellowships

The Southampton Astronomy Group invites expressions of interest from candidates intending to apply for the STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship 2026.

The University can support only a limited number of candidates, so an internal selection process will be carried out ahead of the UKRI deadline. Potential applicants must submit an Expression of Interest (EoI), which will be assessed by internal panels to decide which applicants can be supported.

Southampton internal application process

To submit an EoI, please complete the University online Expression of Interest form no later than 16:00 on Thursday 2 July 2026. In addition, please send a 2-page academic CV to funding@soton.ac.uk by the same deadline.

The EoI will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Vision
  • Approach
  • Capability to Deliver
  • Career Development

The EoI form allows a maximum of 1500 characters per section, approximately 250 words. Applicants should align their responses with the criteria advertised in the UKRI funding opportunity, expected to be published from 2 June 2026.

Selection timeline

  • 2 June 2026: STFC call expected to be published
  • 2 July 2026, 16:00: Southampton EoI deadline
  • No later than 20 July 2026: applicants informed of the internal selection outcome
  • 30 September 2026, 16:00: UKRI submission deadline

Prior contact

Prospective applicants are required to make prior contact with a potential host sponsor in the Astronomy Group to discuss hosting opportunities within the group. This host sponsor will aid with costings, institutional support and any other queries. Applicants who need assistance with contacting sponsors may also contact the Head of Astronomy, Prof Poshak Gandhi.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

We are fully committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, and we want our group to provide an open and inclusive environment where students and staff of all backgrounds can thrive and feel valued. This is reflected in our approach to internal selection, which is fair and transparent, and includes a diverse range of reviewers.

If you require any reasonable adjustments to the selection process, please contact Jamie Chadd, Research Funding Officer, at funding@soton.ac.uk.
