Southampton Astronomy
Compact Objects and Time Domain Astronomy
[Update June 25: The Group has received an exceptionally high number of EoI queries this year. Please note that our ERF sponsorship capacity is limited, so applicants considering us as host institution should reach out to potential staff members who could sponsor their application as soon as possible.]
The University can support only a limited number of candidates, so an internal selection process will be carried out ahead of the UKRI deadline. Potential applicants must submit an Expression of Interest (EoI), which will be assessed by internal panels to decide which applicants can be supported.
To submit an EoI, please complete the University online Expression of Interest form no later than 16:00 on Thursday 2 July 2026. As part of the process, you are also required to separately email two PDF documents to funding@soton.ac.uk by the same deadline: (i) academic CV and (ii) Vision & Approach. Both of these are limited to 2 pages at most.
The EoI will be assessed against the following criteria:
The EoI form allows a maximum of 1500 characters per section, approximately 250 words. Applicants should align their responses with the criteria advertised in the UKRI funding opportunity, expected to be published from 2 June 2026.
Prospective applicants are required to make prior contact with a staff sponsor in the Astronomy Group to discuss hosting opportunities within the group. This sponsor will aid with costings, institutional support and any other queries. Each member of our staff can sponsor only one application to ensure that all applicants receive full support throughout the process. Applicants who need assistance with contacting sponsors may also contact the Head of Astronomy, Prof Poshak Gandhi.
We are fully committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, and we want our group to provide an open and inclusive environment where students and staff of all backgrounds can thrive and feel valued. This is reflected in our approach to internal selection, which is fair and transparent, and includes a diverse range of reviewers.
If you require any reasonable adjustments to the selection process, please contact Jamie Chadd, Research Funding Officer, at funding@soton.ac.uk. Further queries may also be directed to the Head of Astronomy Prof Poshak Gandhi.
