Ernest Rutherford Fellowships

The Southampton astronomy group is seeking applications from candidates intending to apply for STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowships in the 2026 applications round.

The group can only support a strictly limited number of candidates, and so an internal selection process will be carried out prior to the closing date (likely) in October.

The timetable for this process is:

  • Assuming an STFC timeline similar to 2025, applications to the department must be received by early July 2026 (watch this space for exact date). Please email material to hogastro [AT] soton.ac.uk. These applications should include:
    • The UKRI Resume for Research and Innovation (R4RI)
    • Key information sections of the form, i.e. years postdoctoral experience, Vision, Approach, Capability to deliver, References, and list of directly relevant publications/outputs
    • written permission for us to store and distribute your data electronically for the purposes of the selection process.
  • Applicants will be informed of the results of the internal selection process within about one week.

We are fully committed to promoting equity, diversity & inclusion, and we want our group to provide an open and inclusive environment where students and staff of all backgrounds can thrive and feel valued. For more details, see our ED&I page.

All prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact any of our members of staff to discuss the opportunities within the group, or directly to the Head of the Astronomy Group, hogastro@soton.ac.uk.
