Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents: From The Beginning!

On Thursday 17th February 1977 the deep-sea submersible Alvin made a discovery that would forever change our perception of the marine abyss. The Alvin team were the first to directly observe deep-sea hydrothermal vents and the unique fauna that they support. More than 30 years on, we are still investigating these phenomenal habitats to help define the origins of life on Earth, the potential for deep-sea mining operations and even for advances in medicine. Using footage from a recent expedition to the East Scotia Sea (Southern Ocean) this talk will tell the story of hydrothermal vents; from their initial discovery to the methods we currently use to find and observe them miles beneath the ocean's surface.

Other talks on the docket (i.e. these people agreed in principle to come, but we're still sorting out a date)
