Academic research opportunties exist on campus through funding from EPSRC (the engineering and physical science research council, which funds all areas of engineering and mathematics, plus areas of physics other than particle physics, nuclear physics and astrophysics), the Nuffield Foundation (a charitable foundation with a bursary scheme for summer research projects by undergraduates in most areas), and the Royal Astronomical Society (which funds only astronomy and geophysics related topics). There may be additional opportunities. If you become aware of any, please let me know. If you are interested in research topics on campus, you should consider it your responsibility to ask around to academic staff members if they might be interested in a summer student. SEPNET funds bursaries for summer research as well. These can only be taken by students going from one SEPNET institution to another. Please note also, that for astronomy research, Oxford and Portsmouth are affiliated with SEPNET, so it may be possible to do a project at those institutions as well. For industrial work, SEPNET sponsors some summer bursaries. I will also attempt to compile a list of companies that might be interested in hiring students for the summer outside the SEPNET process. I am already aware of one, Infrared Laboratories, which is based in Tucson, Arizona, in the United States. They make cryogenic systems and infrared detector systems, mostly for astronomical applications, but also for some other applications. They cannot pay you unless you have dual US nationality, but indicated that for a good student, they could probably arrange to cover expenses, so that the student wouldn't be out of pocket for the summer.
