Royal Society University Research Fellowships

The Southampton astronomy group is seeking applications from candidates intending to apply for Royal Society University Research Fellowships in the 2026 applications round.

By 31 July, interested candidates are required to identify a member of our Astronomy staff willing to sponsor their application. This sponsor will aid with costings, institutional support and any other queries. Each member of our staff can sponsor only one application to ensure that all applicants receive full support throughout the process. This is likely to also become a demand management requirement imposed by the Royal Society.

The Fellowship Call is now open, with an internal submission deadline around 03 Sep. Applicants are advised that there is a long lead time to preparing applications, including internal costings and support.

Please email confirmation of contact and sponsor agreement no later than 31 July 2026 to the new Head of Astronomy, Prof Robert Fear.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

We are fully committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, and we want our group to provide an open and inclusive environment where students and staff of all backgrounds can thrive and feel valued. This is reflected in our approach to fellowship support .

If you require any reasonable adjustments to the submission process, please contact the Head of Astronomy and Jamie Chadd, Research Funding Officer, at funding@soton.ac.uk.
